Dear Senator ,
Each night at Open Door Mission, we provide safe shelter for 300 men, women, and children. Every day, we serve more than 700 meals. Throughout the year, thousands receive extra help with food and material items through several empowering outreach programs that enable the working poor and needy to remain independent and in their own homes.
Unfortunately, Open Door Mission turns away more than 100 families—that’s 100 different families—each month. And we have experienced an alarming record of single women seeking services, and sadly each month, we must turn away nearly 60 women because our facilities are full!
Many of the people whom we serve are hurting and suffering from life-altering addictions. Open Door Mission has witnessed first-hand the effects of gambling on men and women and their children. By working directly with those most affected by gambling, I fear that the legalization of Expanded Gambling will only lead to the continued decay of the nuclear family.
Senator , did you know that 21% of the homeless population that we serve willingly admits that they have a chronic-to-severe gambling addiction that has contributed to their inability to earn a liveable wage?
And a recent study by Dr. Robert Goodman from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst has found that an appalling 86% of all compulsive gamblers become involved in crimes such as embezzlement and forgery to help support their habit.
The State of Nebraska and the City of Omaha cannot afford an increase of crime or homelessness. With the legalization of Expanded Gambling, the current development of downtown Omaha will become vulnerable to far more problems than simply panhandling and garbage.
Open Door Mission serves many victims of our gambling neighbors across the river. Senator , please do not allow a casino in Open Door Mission’s backyard!
Sincerely,
Candace L. Gregory
